Piranesi stellt die Basilika S. Maria Maggiore von Nordwesten, von der Piazza dell' Esquilino aus, dar. Sie sprengt in ihrer Größe den oberen Bildrand. Piranesi gibt die Architektur in aller Akribie wieder und hält sogar die Inschriften an der Fassade und an der Basis des Obelisken fest. Im Vordergrund erkennt man eine Anzahl von phantastisch anmutenden Bäumen sowie Baumstrünken, die der Vedute etwas Sonderbares verleihen. Die Schattenwirkungen der Architektur sind in dieser Druckfassung nicht sehr ausgeprägt
